Adopt - A - Park Service Project
Club member Gary Chenault can answer questions about Highway Cleanup.
The James City County Rotary Club has been cleaning a 2 mile section of Rt 199 between Monticello Ave and Longhill Rd since 2002. Trash pick up is scheduled quarterly on a Saturday morning at 8 am. A typical trash pickup service project is as follows:
1- Volunteers meet in the Monticello Shopping Center (behind Burger King ) to pick up orange safety vests / orange trash bags and listen to safety briefing by project coordinator.
2- Group is divided into two teams and carpool to Rt 199. Each team will have a cell phone to communicate with the project coordinator who will be picking up trash at the Monticello Ave / Rt 199 interchange.
3-At Rt 199 the teams walk East bound and West bound to the midway pickup point. They cross the road and return to the carpool vehicles.
4 -Time for this project is directly proportional to the number of volunteers that show up, but typically the trash pick up is completed in 1-2 hrs.
5- Approximately 45 minutes into the pick up the project coordinator will provide bottled water to the volunteers.
6 -The project coordinator is within 2 minutes of his car should a team call for assistance
